UFC on FX 5 Antonio ‘Bigfoot’ Silva vs Travis Browne: Results

Main Event

A big round 1 knockout spelled an early end to the night for Travis Browne, solidifying Bigfoot as a worthy headliner.  The beginning of the fight had Travis Browne throwing some very wild shots and getting countered seemingly at will by the 6’4″ 265lb behemoth.  Some issue with the left knee of Browne made Bigfoot smell blood and the mma veteran was on top of Browne dropping him with a big right hand and ending the night for Travis Browne.

Travis Browne is truly an up and comer to the sport with this being his first MMA loss.  So where does this leave Antonio Silva in terms of a title shot?  These thoughts need to be sidelined and only brought back up when Silva gets a little more momentum by beating a top ten contender in impressive fashion and shedding the stigma of his otherwise unimpressive UFC performance.  The win is definitely a step in the right direction and we can’t wait to see his next fight.  We certainly hope the knee injury isn’t severe.

Co-Main Event

Jake Ellenberger increased his mma record to 28-6-0 when he earned a victory over Jay Hieron. In a highly anticipated match Jake Ellenberger truly showed his superior striking ability and sharp tactics.

In the first round Ellenberger looked to be the more patient of the two, weathering some kicks from Hieron.  The second round definitely went by way of Ellenberger as he finally managed to secure a takedown and leave his opponent a bit bloody to end the round.

The only round that could possibly have been in favor of Hieron was third where the pace significantly slowed and neither fighter fought to finish the other before the bell.  In the end it’s Ellenberger getting his hand raised via unanimous decision.

John Dodson vs Jussier Da Silva

John Dodson elevated his standings with UFC brass when he earned a knockout victory over Jussier Da Silva in a what was turning into a boxing match.  Dodson proved to have heavier hands when he finished Da Silva in the second round.

For Dodson it appears this win means #1 contender status and pits him against the newly crowned division champion Demetrious ‘Mighty Mouse’ Johnson for the 125lb championship.

Josh Neer vs Justin Edwards

Justin Edwards pulled off a much-needed win over Josh Neer this Saturday.  It was Edwards who came out aggressive, over the favored Josh Neer. The first round guillotine choke came at 00:00:45 of the first round and earned Justin Edwards Submission of the Night bonus for $40,000.

Michael Johnson vs Danny Castillo

Michael Johnson secured a nice $40,000 bonus for the night when he managed to turn a hellish round 1 beating into a frenzied round 2 knockout.  Earlier on in the fight Castillo managed to rock Johnson with a crisp short right that sent Johnson onto his backside where he weathered a ground and pound and later found himself on the business end of a side choke that nearly resulted in an early stop but Johnson made it to the bell and found new life in round 2.

From the sound of the bell in the second round Johnson came out the more aggressive fighter and started firing with success early in the round.  It was as if Johnson could land at will as long as he struck first.  The fight ended soon after from a clean punch that met an inbound Castillo and put his lights out.

Aaron Simpson vs Mike Pierce

Mike Pierce moves on to begin a win streak after having lost only one of his last four fights over a split decision against Josh Koshcheck.  Aaron Simpson opened the first round the more dominant fighter when he connected with a sneaky right hand and ended the round with ground and pound from the mount.

Pierce however, weathered the storm and came out in the second round slipping a right of Simpsons and landing a clean shot of his own which immediately floored a sleeping Aaron Simpson at 29 seconds into the round.
