Frank Mir to Replace Alistair Overeem, for UFC Heavyweight Title Against Junior Dos Santos, at UFC 146

It appears Dana White has made the announcement official as he tweeted this late last night, “May 26th is now Mir vs. JDS for the HW title in Las Vegas at the MGM Grand,”.

This announcement comes on the heels of the disclosure that Alistair Overeem (36-11, 1NC) has tested positive for elevated levels of testosterone following the UFC 146 press conference on March 27 that showed Overeem’s levels to be more than twice the allotted limit.  Frank Mir (16-5), originally scheduled to fight Cain Valasquez (9-1) at UFC 146 in an undercard bout, will now replace Alistair Overeem to fight for the belt, this time, against the current heavyweight champion, Junior Dos Santos (14-1).  No opponent for Cain Valasquez has yet been announced.

Frank Mir is coming off a three win fight streak where he has victories over Mirko Filipovic, Big Country and most recently the brutal arm break of Nogueira.  Mir is no newcomer to a UFC title, however.  Mir first won the heavyweight title against Tim Sylvia (30-7) at UFC 48, by way of armbar.  Following the victory Mir suffered a tragic motorcycle accident and spent a bit of time on the mend.  Mir has since recaptured the title only to lose it right after to Brock Lesnar (5-3).

Dos Santos took out Cain Valasquez in an astonishing 64 second, 1st round knockout on the UFC on Fox debut, to earn his championship.  Junior Dos Santos is undefeated in the UFC and holds notable wins over Cain Valasquez, Shane Carwin,Roy Nelson, and Gabriel Gonzaga.  Only 2 of Junior’s professional fights have ever made it to decision.

Overeem Charged with Battery

Just a few days after successfully debuting in the UFC, against opponent Brock Lesner (5-3-0), Alistair Overeem (36-11-0) was charged with one misdemeanor count of battery following an alleged push to a womans face on January 2, “causing her to stagger back”, according to police.

Overeem, the now number one contender in the UFC’s heavyweight division, maintains that he is innocent of any such battery charge.  Alistair Overeem has already hired an attorney in a David Chesnoff in order to represent him at any court hearings.  According to Chesnoff,

Alistair was not arrested, but was summoned to court.  There are two sides to this story and we intend on vigorously defending this. Alistair maintains his innocence.

If Alistair is proven guilty he could face fines up to $1,000 and up to six months jail time at the Clark County Detention Center.  A guilty verdict could end up causing delays to the championship match up, against Junior Dos Santos (14-1-0), later this year.
