The UFC Fight Night Vera vs Sandhagen fight card is announced for Saturday March 25, 2023 at 6:00pm CDT. Live from the AT&T Center in San Antonio, TX and airs on ESPN+.

The men’s and women’s bantamweight divisions are in the spotlight at San Antonio. Top 5 bantamweights Marlon Vera and Cory Sandhagen square off to see who could indeed be the next title contender. Of course that would have to follow current bantamweight title holder, Aljamain Sterling facing off against former champion Henry Cejudo, at UFC 288 in May of this year.

UFC Fight Night Main event – Vera vs Sandhagen

Marlon ‘Chito’ Vera (20-7-1) is on a 4 fight win streak and comes off a 4th round KO/TKO win over Dominick Cruz last year. He has heavy hands and will likely look to keep this a striking war. He has a good sprawl and should be able to have success keeping this fight where he wants.

Cory Sandhagen is coming off of a 4th round TKO win over Yadong Song in September. He looked great in that fight and utilized some impressive elbows that explicitly paid dividends. Check below to see the aftermath of these strikes courtesy of the UFC/ESPN/YouTube.

Top 5 bantamweights square off in a run for the title.

co-main event – Holm vs Santos

The co-main event for this Fight Night will feature #3 Holly Holm vs #6 Yana Santos in a women’s bantamweight bout. The division is currently ruled by the pound for pound queen, Amanda Nunes. Nonetheless, a win here will likely result in a short road to a title fight.

Holly Holm is featured in our Top 10 Female UFC Fighters post. She is currently the #3 bantamweight and comes off of a very close, and controversial, split decision loss to Ketlen Vieira in May of last year. The Preacher’s Daughter is likely looking at a final run for the title as she is currently the oldest UFC active female fighter, although one of the most accomplished women in combat sports.

Yana Santos is also coming off a vicious, 1st round KO loss to Irene Aldana. However, she will likely have a lot of questions to answer as many people will expect the 8 year younger fighter to have an edge. However, it appears the oddsmakers do not agree. Accordingly, the oddsmakers have Holly Holm at -240 and Yana Santos at +200 (at the time of this post).

Fortunately, Monte Morrison was able to recover and finish the last three minutes of the fight. The referee took a point, despite the deduction, Dunlap had done enough to earn the judges decision.

Tristan Overvig vs Billy Elekana also made it to the judges hands. These fighters ended up fighting a tough match. Elekana was winning the stand up contrarily Tristan Overvig really struggled to get the fight to the mat, it never happened. Billy Elekana threw out some good shots to close out the last minute of all three rounds. In the end the judges had it unanimously for Billy Elekana.

Co-main Event

In the main event Impa Kasanganay vs Osama Elsaidy, the bar was set high by Taylor Johnson. Both fighters knew they had to really impress with their performance and the pace showed it.

Kasananay stunned Elsaidy near the end of the first half of the first round. Elsaidy recovered but his stamina was shot. A couple of hooks from Kasanganay and Elsaidy was done.

It came down to the two finishes of the night. As with every PFL Challenger Series event, there can be only one contract winner each week. Surprisingly, there was no need for the Bellator president to get involved. The judges and the fans finally agreed, that winner would be Impa Kasanganay.

The main event featured 2 promising talents in contract winner Brahyan Zurcher (4-0-0) vs David Evans (5-1-0). The two came out busy throwing tons of shots from each fighter. The round ended with Zurcher working from Evans half-guard, likely winning the round 10-9.

In round 2, Zurcher began to throw a lot of kicks at his opponent. Zurcher later mixed in a beautiful level change. With some great jiu jitsu he had his opponent’s back. Finally, he worked for a rear-naked choke, instead he settled on neck cranking his opponent into submission.

PFL Challenger Series Week 6 co-main Event Results

The co-main event featured Irish fighter Nathan Kelly vs US fighter Zack Hicks. Nathan Kelly looked phenomenal in this matchup. The Irishman came out and controlled the center of the octagon. He put Hicks against the cage until he was able to get the fight to the mat. Finally, he sunk an arm-triangle and got the win in just 2.5 minutes of the first round.

Ago Huskic vs Gabriel Braga was an interesting fight. The two had a pretty good back and forth in the first round, until, Huskic got the back of Braga and was unable to secure the submission. Huskic had a body triangle and was working the rear naked but ended up gassing himself out for the remaining rounds. Braga ended up getting the nod from the judges thanks to his submission defense.

In the first fight of the night, Gozalez vs Ruhil, it was pretty back and forth through the beginning of the first round. Vikas Singh Ruhil was able to land a couple of shots that were immediately retaliated by Gonzalez, who connected with a huge hook that sat down Sing Ruhil. Immediately, Gonzalez got full mount and landed shots until the referee was forced to call it.

Below are the results and updated records.

The main event, Jon Jones vs Ciryl Gane for the vacated heavyweight title. We were hoping to write a lot about this one but with the fight only lasting 2.5 minutes, we’ve found there’s little to write about.

Upon entering the octagon some question was brought up about Jon Jones tape on his foot/toe. After some officials convened, it was stated that he would have to modify the brace to only be on the toes. It was cut and that was that.

Jones opened up with some leg kicks and the only strike Gane landed, was a cup check that Jones took a moment to recover. They met back in the middle, where Jones took Gane to the ground with some slick wrestling. Then, moments later, he had Gane tapping from a guillotine choke in just over two and half minutes into the fight.

A legends status as the greatest fighter of all time may be solidified. Who will question him? A call out to fight Stipe Miocic was made by Jones and that appears to be targeted for international fight week this summer. The goat’s octagon interview is below.

Jon Jones dominated his opposition at UFC 285. Do people doubt his goat status?

UFC 285 co-main event Shevchenko vs Grasso

In the co-main event, Mexican fighter Alexa Grasso shocked the world! In a fight that was way more competitive then it appeared on paper. Alexa Grasso came out a woman on a mission. Setting up the fight with some excellent boxing in the first round. It wasn’t until the champion Valentina Shevchenko, was able to secure a takedown and nullify Grasso’s striking.

It seemed to be a great strategy for Shevchenko. She was able to dominate her opponent through round two and most of round three. That is, until the referee stood these fighters up, even interrupting Shevchenko as she was posturing up to pour even more shots on her opponent. The referee stood them up in the middle of the octagon. A moment later another scramble ensued and Grasso head kicked an obviously downed Shevchenko with a grossly illegal kick that the referee seemed oblivious about.

In the fourth round, Shevchenko threw a patented spinning back kick that Grasso deftly avoided and ended up behind the champion. She immediately took her back and sunk in a seriously tight rear naked choke. The champion’s reign was at an end. It was tap out or pass out, and Shevchenko took the former. Alexa Grasso is the new women’s flyweight champion.

With other fighters on the rise, like Erin Blanchfield, should these two meet again?
